I grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota. I attended the University of Chicago, where Donald Davidson directed my bachelor’s thesis, the University of Frankfurt, where I took courses from Richard Rorty, and the University of Pittsburgh, where Wilfrid Sellars directed my dissertation.

My publications are in the areas of Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, and Philosophical Logic. I have taught courses on a wide range of other subjects as well.

I taught for many years at the University of Cincinnati. In 2014 I moved to beautiful Salzburg, where I am the Professor of Theoretical Philosophy.

On a visit to Salzburg, Prof. Dena Schottenkirk (Brooklyn College, CUNY) invited me to an interview for her talkPOPc podcast series. She wanted to know what imagistic cognition, as I call it, contributes to our appreciation of graphic arts. I think we had an interesting conversation. You can listen to it here.
